Saturday, August 1st, 2009 - a long overdue update!

Hello all!

Let me start by thanking all of you on behalf of my family and myself, for your continued support. This posting is long overdue and I'm afraid it is because the Spring/Summer have not gone as smoothly as we had hoped.

The first frustration is with my health. I continue to be riddled with these damned urinary tract/bladder infections and they knock me out, but the antibiotics knock me out even more. On top of that, I've contracted a bacteria called MRSA (very common in a hospital setting), which has me on isolation in my room, which actually doesn't make sense to me or my family as I still go to therapies without gowning up, etc. Then I had to go back to KGH for day surgery to have a G-tube (feeding tube) put into my abdomen as I have not had much of an appetite with all these infections and antibiotics and have lost approx. 60 lbs since my accident. I now receive feeds through the night and Gatorade sometimes during the day to keep me healthy & hydrated. I also have an ulcer on my tailbone that I got day 3 post injury, that is progressively getting worse. The doctors hope that increasing my nutrition and putting some weight back on will help with this. My newest ailment is another infection that has gotten into my bloodstream. I'm on a very heavy-duty antibiotic to combat this. I also suffer very bad spasms (which is not completely uncommon in my situation), but they seem to get worse with all these infections, so they've put me on a third antispasmatic medication to help combat this. A side effect of this is lower blood pressure, which often causes me to black out when I sit up (in bed or in my wheelchair). With my health not being the best these days, I've spent a lot of time in bed which prevents me from attending therapy, which is a big frustration as my goal is progress, not regress.

On the home front, the military is also frustrating me. I have met with Commanding Officers, Base Commanders, representatives from Ottawa and two Generals who have all said to let them know whatever I need, and that money is not an issue. From the beginning we were told that we would have to add on to our house, or re-build. Now they are saying the military does not do either one of these things as public funds do not cover 're-builds', that they can only modify our existing dwelling. For any of you who have been to our home, you know that this is not possible. We live in a modest two-storey home that is simply not large enough for me to maneuver throughout (not the best time to be so damned tall!). Our master bedroom is upstairs and too small to fit my bed & chair. I cannot get into any of the bathrooms in our home, so we need to add on to our house and install an elevator and a master bedroom & bathroom on the main floor. The military had hoped we would move, but we live on 3-acres in the country, are close to town, live nextdoor to one of our best friends, and live on the water (not nice swimming water, it's marshy - but we have a great ice rink in the winter)....so we do not want to move, and have made this clear from the beginning. Now we're waiting for DND to officially say 'no, we will not add on or re-build', so that we can try to access funding elsewhere to cover this portion. Needless to say we haven't broken ground or made any modifications to the home that will assit with a permanent homecoming. Kirsty had hoped I would be home by August, but now I'll be really lucky to be home by Halloween (1-year post injury), and more realistically, my family is VERY hopeful I will be home in time for Christmas.

The van has also been another fight. We purchased a Dodge Sprinter cargo van. This is more expensive than a normal van, but we felt due to my height and traveling with the boys that this vehicle would require the least amount of modifications (the military is paying for the modification portion). This vehicle was the best option for the size of our family and our travels (i.e. hockey tournaments), not to mention when you add luggage and all of my items to travel with (portable lift-fits into a ski bag, commode chair-does not fold down, mattress-fits into a hockey bag, and all my additional healthcare supplies). Even with this large van, it will be a tight squeeze to fit everything/everyone. The military said they'd pay for all modifications, but we had to fight to get windows in the van (windows!), and a bench seat for the boys to sit in that folds into a bed in case I need care while we're traveling. We lost the fight on having the ugly white van painted (very cargo-looking), as well as having a stereo/DVD system installed for traveling (which we have in our current family vehicle for traveling). But this will be our main family vehicle, so on top of having to purchase this expensive vehicle (which we would not have been able to do without the fundraiser money - thank you!), we have to pay to have it painted and an entertainment system put in. So this van, which we purchased months ago, just got sent for the conversion 1 1/2 weeks ago due to all the red tape in getting approvals on the conversion process. The quote for the timing of the conversion is 10-12 weeks, so we are VERY hopeful that it is ready sooner, but realistically we likely won't have the vehicle (Milnemobile) until the end of September/early October.

Well - that's the past 2 1/2 months in a nutshell. I realize I haven't posted, but honestly not much has changed, except that my level of frustration has greatly increased.
Kirsty, the boys and I are trying very hard to stay positive and we are hopeful we are now heading in the right direction. I'm hoping to start feeling better to get back to therapy next week. For the house, the submission went to Ottawa yesterday, and when they officially say 'no', then we can move forward with other options. I am also hopeful the van will be finished early, but am grateful it's finally started! The weekends at home (I come home every weekend now) are a real lifesaver and Kirsty and the boys seem to like having me home :) I feel better, I eat better and it's just nice to 'be home'.

Thank you all for your continued support. Please keep sending those positive thoughts and prayers our way - they really help keep me and my family stay positive!

I know this hasn't been a very uplifting posting, but that's the way life's been. Hopefully from here on out, the red tape will be cut and the stars will align and we will get going with everything, so that I have more positive things to report in my next postings. In the meantime, Team Milne will soldier on, remain positive, and hope for the best.

Cheers my friends,

Captain Scott
& the rest of Team Milne

PS If you are wanting to visit me at St. Mary's in the evenings, please call first (613)548-7222 x.2230 and just check that I am up for visitors. I always feel terrible when folks have made the trip to the hospital, paid for parking, and then I am not well enough (or just resting) for company.

Hey Scotty, Kirsty and kids...
I just wanted to let you know that we're still thinking of you, here in Ottawa. I'm sorry to hear about your setbacks with your illnesses and the house/van problems. Thanks for the update though, and hopefully things will turn around. Keep fighting! You're a trooper.

Hi Scott,
I'm sorry to hear that you and your family are having a difficult time getting the support you need to reno your home, etc. I'm thinking that if/when you have pursued all avenues with the military, all of us who post to this sight should begin to pursue all avenues we can think of. Keep us updated, and as a community, perhaps we can come up with ways to help. If you need us to start a letter writing campaign.....just let us know. It seems you have such a committed following there must be more we can do.
In the meantime, take very good care of yourself, try not to get discouraged--there are ways to make things happen. Best wishes to you and your family.

Love, Kathy

Hello Team Milne,

Nice to hear from you however I am sad to hear the trials & tribulations you are facing, doesn't seem right. I echo sentiments from Kathy, if you need us to help, please make sure you let us know.
I had to laugh at the van & window story ~ we went van shopping (ours is now pushing 389,000 kms) and were looking at the same type of van for our large brood and the first thing one of teenage boys said was "Dad, come on, we can't ride around in a white box on wheels; there's no windows!" I had to agree, so vans with no windows are off the list!! Hang in there my friends!
Hugs for all of you, Cheryl & family

Hi Scott,

Urinary tract infections, MRSA, Bloodstream infection, sounds like your fighting a microbial war! I know it may sometimes feel like you are not Doing much, but sometimes the best thing to do is eat, sleep and let your immune system do the fighting. Not quite the warfare you have been trained for, but in my opinion a more important battle to win.

As for the van and house, I am certain everything will turn out ok eventually. What is really important is to be reunited with your familly...

Eat and rest well, stay positive and go easy on yourself, let those microbe dudes know that the battle is on!

Hugs and Kisses to the Milne Team.

Hi Scott, I'm so sorry to hear of your recent health issues as well as the "red tape" involved in having your house made accessible to you. I'm hoping and praying that this will change and the funds will become available to you to make this happen! Keep up the fight and stay positive our family continues to pray for you, Kirsty and the boys!!!

Scotty

I have not been in to visit in quite a while. The summer is busy with the kids and doing home renovation (at least mine are going forward I guess).

Please know that I still think of you everyday.

Don't see missing treatement as regressing. You are still working at getting stronger by fighting the viruses. Stay strong brother.

Scott,

We've been away for a period of time. But, we have been thinking of you. Jim Dempsey sends his best to you.

Sorry to hear about all your infections, viruses etc but they're just nuisances to your focus on progressing.

How frustrating it is to be told one thing and then have the plan turned upside down when "they" back out on everything. Have you tried Veterans Affairs Canada to see if they will provide some assistance? They have been really good to a friend of mine.

Hang in there. I know the going is tough but as Howie said "there is still fight left in you".

As always, Mark and I are thinking of you, Kirsty, Tanner, Kobe and Rees.

Theresa

Hello Again Team Milne: Thank you for the update. Whether the news is good or not we all want to go along this journey with you, Kirsty and the boys and want to help out whenever you need us to. Nick is in hockey school this week and enjoying it. We can't believe the trouble that you are having with your house and van. It just seems unbelievable but we are hoping that everything will soon fall into place. If not, Nick has done a great job on turning his swing set into an army fort, so perhaps he can come and help with your construction job!!!! He can even bring his own hammer.... We will be into visit very soon as I know Greg told you on his last visit that Nick has a super gold medal to show Coach Scott from ball hockey. Love to you all and if you need us just call us.

Hey Scott! Nice to see the update, it was great to have an opportunity to visit in person. I can understand that this entire process is nothing short of SHITTY but know that your inner strength is so important to this whole battle. Keep digging deep for the positive energy and pushing those nurses especially ELLEN to get you going.

As for DND nothing seems to go through quickly with government funding, keep pushing! I hope you'll be able to make the modifications with the house and get you home before the anniversary date of the accident. I believe the infections will be easier to treat and when they are cleared up they'll be gone. Trust me your home is SOOO much cleaner then any of our local hospitals (it's a tragedy the infection and disease due to hospital stays).

I can only imagine seeing Kirstys smiling face and those beautiful boys gives you the will to fight for what you know in your heart is the best for all of you and that is strength to continue to fight and progress.

We're behind you 110% we're only a call away. We look forward to stopping by the house to visit someday and find you settled and comfortable at home!

Thinking of you always.... The Gordons.

Although it sounds like you have a big battle on your hands...it is still good to hear from you. I know for me, I knew this wasn't going to be an easy adventure for you. There is no doubt in my mind that this must be the most challenging and frustrating thing you have ever had to deal with it. I have a friend who became a quadrapaligic (C6) as a young adult. He has shared with me a lot of the challenges that you describe. However, 20 years later, he is a very active, contributing member of our West Kelowna community - so I have hope that you too will overcome your challenges. The Scott I remember has a stubborn streak to recon with and determination beyond my wildest dreams. You too will perceiver. You have a lot of friends, fans and cheerleaders to support you on your journey.

I love hearing you describe where you live. Funny, Andy and I live in a very similar type area - small fishing lake in our backyard - great for hockey in the winter. We back onto a regional park so it is our own little piece of paradise. I can totally understand why you want to stay where you are and like my mom, and Cheryl M. said earlier - there is a bunch of us that are prepared to do some battle for you IF you do not get anywhere with the military. So do please keep us posted on that front.

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers daily....stay strong and optimistic my friend - you can do it! Cheryl

Hello Scott,
How very nice to hear from you once again.
So sorry to hear about all the health issues lately. But it can only get better you know!!
It wouldn't be long and that dam van will be ready and you guys will be out and about. That will certainly make you feel better to have your own transportation.
And now for the miltary situation. What can we do? We certainly would help with any letter writing or what ever.
Love you lots and you are always in our thought. Keep those spirits up.
Mom, Dad and Sophie

Hey Scott,
I am Glad to see your update. I was wondering how things were going. We don't get as much detail at work as to what your situation is. I have to say that I am hoping you get Home for good soon. My wife works in Home-Care and agrees that it is important for your overall health. Once you are home it will relieve ALOT of stress for you and your family. it does bring new challenges but it well worth it mentally.
I hope the RED tape clears up soon... have faith buddy it will come together soon!
